Sometimes too much ambition ruins your life. I served as a Bishop in Nashville
Tennessee. Saw a lot of people give up regular lives for the dream of being a star. It made the lives of their families worse almost without exception. Fathers would come and refuse to work a regular job because they were convinced it would hinder their chances of that big break. The church ended up having to take up the slack in providing food, clothing and shelter. Parents would push kids to be a star and create lousy value systems. The kids would truly believe that life just wasn't worth living if they never became rich and famous.

If they were young adults and single, then giving a set number of years to chasing their dream made much more sense.

If it were me, I'd let the kid be a kid. If he has the natural talent and the love for the game, then the cream will rise to the top.
