Don't compromise the family or his youth years just so he can play at a small college as the best case scenario. Let him play local, be a star, and enjoy these high school years instead of spending endless hours in the car. His life will be much more than a 5 year window of basketball. That's my opinion, at least.
Plus, if he ever gets hurt, these kids struggle to deal with the injury because their entire value and worth has been built around basketball and they clearly see the time, money, and energy spent on their development. They also often feel bummed out if they don't live up to high expectations.
It sounds like you are leaning AAU and I hope everything works out for your boy. These are really hard decisions.
