Start mixing up too much of the athletic with the academic has proven to be very destructive. The European soccer club system is a very good example, as is minor league baseball. Glad the NBA has a team to help develop high school talent, and wish they had more. Tennis has had multiple grand slam champions that aren't old enough to have graduated high school.
Ultimately, the mix of semi-pro sports with colleges is always going to be an "oil and water" mixture. The academics want higher standards to guard against the abuse of the system, while the athletics department is always going to run it like a pro franchise.
As always, the students are the ones that get left paying the bills, and are the real losers in all of this.
