I think some favoring mercy vs. doling out letter of the law justice in cases like these would be mods appropriate, even if the victim broke the honor code.

Yes, there needs to be accountability. But empathy and understanding on the face if a horrific crime is also necessary. Mercy and justice can both be satisfied without kicking someone out of school.
