You're very right. It's not the end of the world. He (and we) knows that.
He has every plan to serve a mission. He wanted to complete a year of school first and then go. We thought that would be great as it would give him the opportunity to live away from home, have a "true" freshman experience, take some Book of Mormon and mission prep classes as he gained some more life experiences to apply during his mission. But, he will be deciding what to do next. Going on his mission after HS graduation is back on the table.
