RE: 3.77 unweighted GPA (4.34 weighted), 34 ACT...rejected. We're shocked right
We are in a similar state of shock here in Texas with our son. 33 ACT,
3.67 GPA. (4.0 weighted) 4 years seminary, etc...
But we have read other posts today of many other parents in the same state of confusion. Others with 34's and even 1 post I read of a 36 act being rejected, also seminary,Eagle Scouts, etc. It would appear Byu has changed their algorithm, curious to know how they're selecting now-- it's definitely not considering academics as most important. (Not that my son was lacking extracurriculars either though) My son's 4 friends who go to church and seminary with him did not believe him when he told them he did not get in. They got in with 27-29's on act and similar to slightly higher GPA , same high school, similar amount of extracurriculars. These are kids who regularly asked my son to tutor them in chemistry and physics. Perhaps byu is looking to change the vibe at the school- maybe they have too many 33+ ACT scoring students, perhaps they are worried those kids will study too much and not add enough to the social scene. I can't imagine the seminary teacher being the weak link in the app- he made my son seminary class president and was his YM leader and had a good relationship, also can't imagine stake president being the weak link... but who knows.
Whatever the reason behind the academic "shoo-ins" not getting in, I am going to feel salty for a day and then move on. Great things can come of this. Lessons in adversity and humility. Our kids will be fine. But we as parents may be confused for a while. I'd be interested to hear if you find out any more detail on what they felt lacked in your son's app. I haven't heard of these situations in years past- but perhaps this happens every year?
