Look at the chart in this article, for perspective. The column titled “Civilian

deaths due to military activity and crimes against humanity,” specifically. Poland alone had almost as many as China, despite the fact that China’s population was 15x greater and the war lasted 2 years longer in China. And that’s before you count German atrocities in the Soviet Union and the rest of Europe.

Also, for perspective, the Japanese never built extermination camps or committed genocide. In fact, in Shanghai you can visit the Jewish settlement that Japan built there to take in Jewish refugees who were fleeing from the Germans during the war. I’ve been there.

World War II casualties

World War II was the deadliest military conflict in history. An estimated total of 70–85 million people perished, which was about 3% of the 1940 world population (est. 2.3 billion).The tables below give a detailed country-by-country count of human losses. World War II fatality statistics vary, with estimates of total deaths ranging from 70 million to 85 million. Deaths directly caused by the war military and civilians killed are estimated at 50–56 million people, there were an additional estimated 19 to 28 million deaths from war-related disease and famine.
