atrocities are worse.

These are some lengthy listens but it takes that long for it all to fully sink in. The Japanese did some truly horrifying stuff.

Rape of Nanking:

Japanese took over the city of Nanking shortly after a battle in Beijing I believe. They wanted to round up all the soldiers who had escaped and were hiding and get pay back etc. They proceeded to massacre 1,000s and 1,000s of civilians, men, women and children.

Two officers had a contest of who could behead the most civilians on the way there.

Civilian men were forced to dig mass graves and were shot by the hundreds.

Many women were raped and killed, often with the added disgrace of shoving sticks and sometimes bayonets in... uncomfortable places.

Multiple accounts of babies being thrown in the air and caught with bayonets or swords.

Siege went on for a long time with 1,000s of murders and atrocities but interestingly there was a safe zone where westerners lived in town who would try to talk down the Japanese and would harbor Chinese. In fact it was a Nazi man who was horrified by the Japanese actions and took the lead in saving many Chinese.

Unit 731:
Some highlights:
Unit 731 was a biological weapons research facility in main land China. The Japanese performed experiments on Chinese civilizations and allied POWs.

Vivisections were routinely performed on victims with no anesthesia.

Experiments on frost bite and freezing.

Experiments on shrapnel patterns for explosives with victims tied to posts next to explosives.

Experiments on STDs where victims were injected with different STDs and other diseases and then forced to have sex with other prisoners to see how they spread. These tests included pregnant women.

Experiments weaponizing the bubonic plague which includes giving out infected treats to village kids nearby and outright bombing villages with plague infected fleas. That was their plan for the west coast BTW.
