You play the hand you are dealt, play to your strengths, and improve your

position over time. I'd love any last minute huge positive surprises, but we know well that some of our best ever recruits didn't pan out and some of our under the radar people have been among our biggest success stories. Overall the star system is a decent leading indicator, but when you aren't yet winning those battles you need to focus on what you can control.

The coaches/program need to be lazer focused on anything they can do for player development and creating a system that can balance out talent challenges.

I love this coaching staff as people, but not sure I see any of that happening any time soon. Don't seem to be innovative on strength and conditioning, don't seem to be making miracles happen on player retention, don't see any system coming in anytime soon on offense or defense that equalizes the playing field, and don't see any great in-game strategic decision making. When Charlie Strong just gives up on the pass and runs it over and over and you don't adjust it doesn't inspire confidence in Tuiaki. When all you can muster is 3 points on SDSU it doesn't inspire confidence in Grimes.

I really like Kalani as a head coach and again I like everyone on the staff on a personal level. But they need a Bronco-esque defensive coordinator or Tuiaki needs to learn to be Bronco-esque quick. They need a Mike Leach-esque offensive coordinator or Grimes needs to learn to be Mike Leach-esque quick. And they need a Boise State-esque player development program. All of this stuff can be benchmarked and learned. They can do it with the current crew if they are humble and hungry enough.

From a recruiting standpoint they need to really dial in their competitive value proposition, figure out who that prop resonates with among top kids and make it happen. I think Criddle may be right that for mom's it's pitching them on what a great environment their son will go to with the best possible dating pool for future daughters in law. For dads it's probably the phenomenal television exposure their kid will get against top tier opponents - best positioning them for the NFL. That's probably the same pitch to the boys along with the alumni network that will hook them up after graduation if, for whatever reason, they don't go to the NFL - there is still a great job for them at Weave, Domo, Instructure, Qualtrics, etc.

There. I said my peace. Now how's your mom?
