One example of how dumb open enrollment is
Cottonwood High has weak enrollment. In order to increase their enrollment, they are looking at adjacent schools like Olympus. Olympus has maybe 500 students who attend from outside school boundaries. 250 or so of those students are zoned to Cottonwood. Instead of simply closing Olympus to open enrollment and asking these students to attend their zoned school, they are looking at rezoning Olympus boundaries. Kids who live in the heart of Holladay and whose families bought homes there because of Olympus High School will now be zoned to Cottonwood.

So our solution is to keep open enrollment so more students who don’t live there can attend there while forcing kids who live there to play youth sports and perform other extracurricular activities at a school farther away in hopes that they will attend the newly zoned school instead of attending their nearby school as an open enrollee.
