RE: The whole university system is based on bailouts. - This is ridiculous
Maybe the University needs to not rely so much on "bailouts". Isn't the fact that 15 million church members subsidize the education there enough? I'm fine with subsidizing salaries for professors and keeping tuition low for students who want to attend BYU. Those things serve the kingdom and church in a profound way. Educating church members and keeping debt low are good for everyone. BYU Athletics? Not really. If BYU football is so very important then the answer isn't get more money from the church. Its use the money you've got differently or raise more money independent of the church. I imagine most people around here don't favor a liberal "tax and spend" philosophy for expanding the scope of collective institutions like the federal government. Don't divert money from programs that benefit many or serve a genuine purpose in building up and preserving the kingdom of God for a single interest group. If BYU football needs more money and title 9 says you have to share it, then cut elsewhere or have a big capital campaign drawing on the loyal and true fan base. That's what every other institution does. There's no sense on spending the hard earned money stemming from worldwide tithing donations on BYU athletics. BYU fans may think BYU athletics are a "great missionary tool" but they aren't. I grew up in Texas. BYU athletics means nothing there. Not one of my Baptist friends said to me, "Hey man I saw BYU beat Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl. Tell me more about your beliefs". It never happened. Never. BYU athletics may serve those who participate well, and make attending the university more fun, and offer a great connection for alumni, and for that they should probably be kept around, but if BYU fans believe in those things they should donate. They should buy expensive tickets. They should put their money where their mouths are. Church members who are alumni of other institutions do this why can't BYU fans? For all the great history and tradition you guys claim it should be something you can do. How many BYU alumni are there? How many BYU fans are there? Use their money. Not Mine. BYU fans and alums shouldn't expect 15 million others to subsidize their fun.

City Creek Center served an important role in making the area around church headquarters accessible and pleasant. That may seem the same, but its not. There's a Granite Temple on that block that members of the church cut out of the mountains and built from the desert floor up with their bare hands that cannot be moved or upgraded. There's a tabernacle. There's a conference center. There's an administration building and a huge office building. Some would say these are just buildings, but I think they are more than that and I think more people would be upset at downtown SLC turning into a ghetto around temple square than with BYU Football not having a fancier stadium. BYU athletics are not in the same ballpark.

The church spends a lot of money on lots of projects small and large that benefit a minority, but they tend to have a real purpose in directly improving spiritual well-being or contributing in legitimate ways to building up the kingdom. I don't think BYU football legitimately falls under this umbrella.
