Good thoughts. Two potential problems, though. First, what about Title IX?
I really doubt women's sports will give up so easily, and will demand the same level of athlete compensation, and I think they'd get it.
Second, if BYU cut unprofitable sports, so would other, better-funded athletic departments in the top conferences. We'd eventually end up with the same other-sport burdens and they'd still drive us into the red financially because they have much larger budgets and are not afraid to spend every dime.
