You're confused...
The church has financials very much in mind. City Creek was a financial choice, they didn't just do it to be pretty, they did it to make money. If the church thinks they'd gain more than they put into BYU through exposure or whatever their end game is they'd do it. That being said, BYU football revenue is almost twice their cost. They would gain more by cancelling random other sports programs and taking their money and putting it into football than by cancelling football.
