Rich Lather All-American
2 young men I know pretty well applied this year and I'm really frustrated
by the outcome. I know that many of you won't believe these facts but here they are.

Boy A: 35 on the ACT. He was in the IB program so that may have impacted his grades. Don't know his GPA. Didn't get in. Going on a mission instead.

Boy B: 26 on the ACT. Went to 2 different high schools to try to find a fit. Poor student. His family has an incredible history of going to Latin American countries for service and he went along so his application would be very strong on third world service. I've known him since he was a baby and I've never seen him do anything on his own initiative. His family completed his application for him. Got in. I doubt he'll get the motivation to go on a mission since I've never seen him get the motivation to do anything, really.

Frankly, I don't think the way this shook out is in the best interest in either of these boys. One's a poor student who's now going to be in for a rude awakening when he's competing against good students. One's an incredible scholar who has to come up with plan B.

As you can see, I'm pretty worked up about this. I want my kids to go to BYU, but they're on a track far more similar to Boy A. In fact, I'm pushing my daughter to drop the IB program because I think it's way more harmful than helpful in terms of BYU admissions.
