If someone is applying to be a lab assitant or other position, they will need to provide a resume, scholastic history, fill out an application and he probably knows the student from having them in a class. He probably also interviewed them. I don't think he ever said that he assumed which were high test scorers. He probably knows which are in which group based some of the above paths to actually knowing.
