I agree with KingDave that you should have addressed the situation immediately
when you knew it was a situation. The bigger question is why didn't you? You just thought that they could do whatever you wanted because it involved a mission?

I understand plans change, but a school should be part of that as soon as you know it is a problem. Dismissing it and just figuring they would accommodate you 6 months later is pretty irresponsible.
