No, because they were in a structured "program" during the deferment. You can
get deferments for special internships and such or an opportunity to do something overseas. A mission is an easy check the box deferment.
Try getting a deferment because you want to play video games for a year. They won't let you. Your son needed to go to school or have something valid that allowed for deferment.

Have him enroll at UVU and then if he feels the need after his mission he can transfer to the Y or he could get lucky
