Absolutely
Unfortunately, most students inherit their parents expectations when they go to school. For their parents, all you really needed was a degree. There were so few college graduates in the 60, 70's and even 80's that a degree alone could seperate you from the pack.

Now, there are so many well educated people in the work force and even more joining everyday, that it takes far more than education to separate yourself from the pack.

I meet and speak with college students all over my state and when we talk I always like to point out that for 1 entry level position in my organization (paying $40,000 a year), I will get 150 applications and 70 of them will have master's degrees. Graduates today are entering the most hyper-educated workforce in human history. They have to get real serious about their schooling if they want to stand out- this means internships, jobs, major, volunteer experience, everything matters more than it ever has.
