RG3 Goes to Washington
RG3 is a great player, but as the Washington NFL team has shown, he is no panacea.
Maybe what you don't want to admit is that their coach is the difference, not RG3. Baylor was only in the Big 12 because of Ann Richards, but now they are a marquee program.
Briles was hired in 2008 and Baylor posted a typical 4-8 finish with RG3 as QB. They did the same in 2009, but in 2010 they went 7-6 and lost to Illinois in the Texas Bowl (which I attended). In 2011, RG3's senior year, they went 10-3 and won the Alamo Bowl over Washington 67-56 (which I also attended). In 2012, without RG, they slipped to 8-5 and won the Holiday Bowl over UCLA. In 2013, they finished 11-2 and lost the Fiesta Bowl to UCF, their first BCS Bowl game.
This year, 3 years ARG3, they are 6-1 and ranked 12th in the country. They are tied for 2nd place in the Big 12.
So, maybe they will crash back to Earth, but 3 years after RG3 went to they are competing for a Big 12 title and a place in the playoffs. This from a team that won only 3 games the year before Briles became HC.
So, maybe coaching does matter?
