Amazing how many CBers are willing to assume the worst about the HC process.
First, to Derik Stevenson's original question:

The addiction is what's jeopardizing the career, not BYU or the HC office. For instance, it would be silly to blame Sarkisian's firing on Pat Haden's zero-tolerance rule.

In other words, the career of an athlete with an addition is already jeopardized--by the addiction. Seeking help, whether from a bishop or the team psychologist or whatever, is ultimately the only way the athlete will be able to save their career and get their life straight.

Second:

It never ceases to amaze me that many BYU fans and CBers are just as willing as BYU's harshest critics to assume the worst about BYU and/or the HC process and HC office. If you seriously think that someone who seeks help in fighting an addiction will automatically get kicked out of BYU, you know nothing about the team and school you profess to root for.

If I believed that about any school, much less BYU, I couldn't be that school's fan.

That said, withdrawing from school may be necessary to effectively combat a serious addiction. But this would be determined by the appropriate professional, not just some imaginary HC office nazi. And this circles back to the first point: having to withdraw from school to combat a serious addiction is not the result of supposedly unchristian rules. It's the result of a serious addiction.

Might all of this cause an addict to lie about their addiction to try and avoid having to deal with it? Uh, yeah. Have you ever known an addict? Trying to hide it is symptomatic and certainly not a BYU-only phenomenon.
