As a young man who grew up in Utah county I can tell you lying runs rampant
A lot of the young men that I knew who served missions lied to get into the MTC. I know several women who lied to get their recommends to get married. Easier for them to lie...then to have to essentially admit to all of your friends/family that you committed a grievous sin.
I'm sure the majority of temple recommend holders don't lie to get them, but I know for a fact that there a lot of people that do.
