This is a copout and basically equivalent to someone saying,
"well, you knew when you were baptized what you were getting into, and you failed. Excommunicated."
Except with the HC office it's even worse since expulsion is not designed to help reform the sinner, and because it's a university action, it often has very permanent and damaging career and social implications in the real world, all for what may have been something they could likely come back from.
