If I decide I value the work-life balance of not working a 50 hour week and my time is more valuable than a bonus - then it could be a conscious decision to work 40 hours and skip the bonus.
If I decide that I value the cash more than I value the time off and work-life balance, then it could be frustrating to not get the bonus - and my work-life balance better shift to demonstrate that I value working extra hours and getting the bonus more than I value time off.
Different personalities may choose one or the other. And neither is the wrong choice - it just depends on what you want in life.
