When you're asked to do something else, don't question the 'why'... that'll just frustrate your manager. Instead focus on the relative priority compared to your other projects. Then just shift your focus accordingly. No need to work additional hours. When asked to take on a new project, ask which of your existing projects should be deprioritized, or given less attention. Most managers are quite receptive to prioritization exercises.
