Many of the departments at the U have graduate programs and insist on maintaining those graduate programs for a variety of reasons, some good some not so good. BYU has limited graduate programs. When comparing the excellence of the departments what would be the metric? As a faculty member I look at the visibility of the faculty member in the discipline. It is not the only metric, but it is an important one. Even without graduate programs, BYU faculty in a variety of departments enjoy visibility in their disciplines.
