First of all, BYU is a direct appendage of the Church and its mission. The cost of attendance is subsidized by Church funds. Or put another way, BYU is funded by the Lord’s money.
In my experience attending BYU, it was the Athletes being held accountable for honor code violations (in my view unfairly so) and not the students. If average Joe BYU student has 'relations' with his girlfriend, the issue gets resolved with his Bishop. The nature of the misstep stays between the student and his ecclesiastical leader. The honor code doesn’t usually hear a thing about it.
On the other hand, when athletes are found to be engaging in the same behavior the honor code office gets involved and the student gets suspended. As a fan this drives me crazy.
I doubt you are genuinely angered by BYU boosters behaving badly, students with connected parents being treated differently, or by anything else you’ve “heard.” Like the church, BYU is full of sinners trying to figure things out.
I’m not sure why being asked as a youth if you were going to BYU causes so much resentment. But I’ve heard this from my Brother in Law how is an active member Ute die hard. He hates BYU and all things Provo.
