Dirty play is not OK. But it is a favorite target of the "ALUF".
The "ALUF" or "Active LDS Ute Fan" is actually a term that was coined some time ago here on CB in reference to Utah fans who would show up and start their post with "As an active LDS Utah fan..." (or some variation of that) and then go on to be critical of BYU or BYU players for one reason or another.

The term doesn't apply to all Utah fans who are active LDS. It just applies to the ones who show up with basically the sole purpose of posting on CB to be judgmental of BYU and/or BYU players, using their membership in the LDS church as justification as to their right to do so.

The typical "ALUF" fits some basic characteristics. Maybe not all - but some combination of these:

MANDATORY - to receive the "ALUF" tag, they must show up and identify them as Active LDS and a Utah fan.

MANDATORY - to receive the "ALUF" tag, they must also be critical/judgmental of BYU, indicating how in one way or another they are upset at something BYU or a BYU player has done that they feel reflects poorly on their religion.

The rest are just basic characteristics that the typical "ALUF" has one or more of.

ALUFs like to judge BYU players for ANY misbehavior - on or off the court. They particularly are fond of "dirty play". The are also regularly hypocritical in this matter - because they crash HARD on any BYU player who is involved in this kind of stuff, while preaching forgiveness and pointing out that they are just kids who make mistakes when it's a Utah player involved in the same antics.

ALUFs like to judge BYU for what they term as non-doctrinal rules at BYU. Yet somehow they fail to recognize that the Board of Trustees (who ultimately approve or change those rules) are the same dudes they raise their hand to sustain twice a year as "prophets, seers, and revelators". Somehow when dealing with BYU, these "prophets, seers, and revelators" are much like Korihor of the Book of Mormon - somehow being deceived by Satan.

ALUFs like to crash hard on any mistake or misbehavior of any BYU fan. They'll let you know about every time a BYU fan has booed, thrown a water bottle, or looked at someone with a frowny face. Yet as an "Active LDS Utah Fan" they have no problem going to a game at their own stadium and watching their own team's fans throw out all kinds of religious slurs, drink shots from sacrament trays, etc., without ever saying a word about how it is offensive to them as members of the same faith.

You get the idea. It isn't being active LDS and a Utah fan that makes one an "ALUF". It's primarily based on the fact that they are at least as hypocritical, self-righteous and judgmental as they accuse BYU fans of being.
