I clearly explained my reasoning for this, and it's quite valid. I'm much more deeply connected to my faith than I am to my football team. When a BYU player does something stupid, it reflects negatively on my religion. When a Ute player does something wrong, it affects negatively on my fandom.

For me, I identify as a latter day saint first and foremost. Ute fan is not close to the top of my list of identities. It's easier for me to brush it off if it happens to a Ute player because it affects me personally less.
