former D1 athletes who couldn’t care less about the schools they played for — it’s odd to me when bookworms become ultra loyal to schools and programs purely because of where they went to school.
It’s interesting seeing people who never or rarely played sports and especially not at the college they attended — become super fans of the school when most of the graduated athletes really don’t care much at all. It was just a place where they got a scholarship for school in most cases.
I do get it more so in cases like BYU, Notre dame and other universities where you have a “college town” experience and you’re really immersed in campus/school life but in cases like the U? Going to the U is like going to SLCC. Most these LDS dudes going to the U live in Sandy or Kaysville and drive there in between their part time jobs and small families. What exactly about that experience creates a unique connection to the school? Seems like it’s merely a location where you happened to hear lectures and take tests.
