wanting to broaden their reach--and its not a bad thing. People from outside of Utah are likely to go back to where they are from--that's a simple fact. "Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve" — and we all know the Church looks at BYU as a large missionary influence. One large grocery company in Texas, Brookshires, had a large percentage of its upper management as Mormon, despite the fact they are a staunch Southern Baptist family. They liked the ethics, honesty, etc. of members of the Church. A large number of those hires were BYU grads. The Church wants BYU grads to permeate the world, in my opinion. And this is not a bad thing, just a reason I think the local fanbase is waning a bit--among the other issues, including losing 9 straight to Yewtah.
