I'd guess the invitation also came with an implicit (or possibly even explicit) suggestion that Utah get themselves to AAU status as soon as possible. PAC12 can't have been happy bringing in a non-AAU team, but clearly it wasn't a complete dealbreaker the same way that not being a Tier 1 Research Institute seems to be.
