If you believe every source has covered it up, that raises a few issues
Primarily that if you really believe that everything is skewed and nobody is out there allowing truth to be told despite all the conflicting ideologies, then we're already in a situation which is much worse than anything you're concerned about here. Worst off than Chinese media.
But to your primary point, I think part of the reason we see things as so extreme and pushed to the edges is because we allow ourselves to demonize the other side and see their extremes as representative, while the extremes on our side we dismiss as outliers.
Someone advocates for the overthrow of capitalism and to shoot police and folks on the right view it as the position of all on the left. Meanwhile someone on the right is outright racist and then folks on the left view everyone on the right as a racist. There are loonies and problematic ideals on both sides, but the most extreme positions aren't held by the majority. And when we act as if they are, we're only increasing that divide.
Not every Trump supporter is a racist (even if there exist some who are), and not every student with an AR-15 is expelled (trust me on this, I live in the South), even if one was restricted from campus and questioned. When we start treating the exceptions as the norm, we're helping to widen that divide. Let's focus on the problem cases instead of generalizing it to make it apply to everyone.
