That's fair; still don't love the analogy, but I agree with the underlying point
If R1 is cars, then what is R2? Some other lesser mode of transportation. Sell the smart car and get a horse instead?
But I do agree that it's a poor choice to prioritize grad research above all else. It's a valuable, useful thing, sure, but not the only thing. If you're arguing that the emphasis on it is overblown, then I absolutely agree with you.
