The U had been working on AAU membership for some time and it was pretty
generally known at the time of P12 admission that it was almost certainly getting in in the very near future. But yes, you're right, it has never been an absolute requirement; the B10 is much more concerned about AAU membership. A lot of folks in the B10 were really pissed when Nebraska got kicked out of the B10 and there were some influential people in the B10 who pushed to get Nebraska kicked out of the conference when that happened.
