I don't think HIV/AIDS is a good comparison.
There are 3 known phases in HIV infection:
acute infection
clinical latency(reduced symptoms)
AIDS
I believe COVID is
acute infection
then either
clinical recovery -OR- COVID long hauler status
In HIV/AIDS you can be contagious the whole time. In COVID after the acute infection, you are no longer contagious.
