in the population. So, yes, your vaccine helps you, but it’s more about the whole population reducing the number of hosts, so that the disease just isn’t prevalent.
That’s every vaccine. That’s why they work.
You’re probably right that immunity from infection has the same effect.
But covid is new. There’s a lot we don’t know. Maybe infection immunity isn’t exactly what we think it is. Maybe fewer people have antibodies than we think.
Maybe covid really is just a more infectious animal than we’ve ever seen before.
And of course we know there are populations with very low vaccination rates.
What we do know is that very, very few of the people going to hospitals are vaccinated, and that A LOT of unvaccinated people are getting sick and going to the hospital.
That suggests that the disease is moving around in the unvaccinated population - they must not have a bunch of effective immunity.
But bottom line is, the way vaccines work is through community immunity, not just individual immunity. We apparently don’t have enough community immunity yet.
