This is true. My EE degree from BYU included much more practical courses and

labwork compared to my coworkers that went to other schools. They were shocked when I was telling them how I designed a VLSI FFT chip, had it fabricated, tested it, and then created my own spectrum analyzer from it all as part of undergrad course labs.
