When I was in college my coach constantly warned us when we were under performing that our scholarship was only a one year commitment and that we may lose it. And some kids, just like Beo, did lose it.

Doesn't have to be. It is that way for all NCAA sports. Unless the school offers says 4-years. Most are 1 year.
