That is a fairly impressive stack of broad statements, which I suppose we are supposed to accept at face value.
One point of agreement I can find is that I likewise would not expect the church to compete in the arms race at the level of an Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, etc.
I do think it's reasonable to fund the program at a level consistent with the lower half of the P5. This we do not do. See Bronco et al to Virginia.
Or if you are unwilling to do that, just come out and say publicly that our commitment to athletics at BYU only goes so far. If your story is the real narrative, they should come out and tell us that narrative. Otherwise drop the façade that we can compete at a high level on a relative shoestring budget and our stack of beloved, mostly self-imposed restrictions. We cannot (in today's college football landscape).
I would not be happy about that, and it would deter my interest in BYU sports and beyond. But I would respect this. BYU is currently a rudderless, underfunded ship being tossed around on the sea of college athletics. If you want to chastise people for not throwing more money at a program in that state, go ahead. I'm just not sure how many people find your arguments compelling enough to start writing checks.
