Person decides they want to be a midwife. Great, apprentices with one, learns a lot, gets really good an birthing babies, and then starts her own business. Things go great for a while. Does 20 or 30 births with zero complications. Feels very experienced and ready. Doesn't realize that she is really only becoming skilled at a very specific kind of birth, i.e. zero complications, progresses naturally. Runs into a situation with some kind of complication, large or small, doesn't recognize it or doesn't know how to handle it, and a tragedy occurs. Looses the baby or mother, or causes long lasting effects. She "retires" from midwifing. May or may not get sued, either way, doesn't have any insurance or assets that are worth pursuing. Any time I meet someone who used to be a midwife, if I ever ask what happened to make them hang it up, its always this.
