Academic Programs
All schools have some particular "advantage." Utah too has an advantage because it tends to draw a stronger set of applicants because of the state in which it is located. It too benefits from religiously minded students who want to enjoy the befits of associating with large numbers of individuals who share their faith.

Neither institution however would continue to enjoy these advantages if they do not produce academic results. The rankings of individual programs are one indicator of excellence. There are others as well that do not receive the same amount of publicity such as number of students who complete Ph.D. programs (in all fields or in specific fields), the number of students enrolled in law or business schools (pick whatever tier you like), or acceptance to other graduate programs such as medical school.

The argument about academic excellence cuts both ways. While BYU fans should not belittle the academic excellence of Utah, Utah fans have little room to stand on when criticizing BYU for a lack of academic excellence.
