A shocking number of people I used to be close with totally flipped on me. It was like I became a different person to them. I was apathetic to the rivalry at this point and applied to BYU for reasons totally separate from sports fandom (had even considered going to the U), but I was excited about being accepted and bought a BYU jacket and put a Y sticker on my car. It didn't take long for the "holier than thou" and other more hateful comments to come rolling in like a mudslide. Not *just* from random strangers mind you, but from people who'd known me my whole life and had never said anything like that to me before. I remember it especially sinking in one time when I got a version of the "holier than thou" attack from a particularly obnoxious Ute fan who was in my ward growing up and who had once shamed me a few years prior for listening to the evil music of Blink-182 😂. I knew then and there that I wanted nothing to do with that fanbase and I became all-in on BYU.
