would say something when this type of mockery or anti-LDS behavior and/or comments were observed, then in my opinion, a lot of it would stop. And the rivalry would become much more civil.

It might be as simple as some courageous LDS Ute fans educating or reminding some of these bad actors in the moment that there are many LDS players, coaches, Alum that donate to the school/program, not to mention the church itself, associated with the school and program that they should probably not continue the behavior for the message to be received.

I know that may be overly hopeful considering the element associated with your fanbase. But McBride was respectable. And a lot of fans followed suit. Urban was despicable. And Whittingham and Scalley have at best shamefully turned a blind eye to it, if not joined in themselves on occasion. Fans have also followed suit.

I've personally known very few respectful Ute fans over the last decade, and those that I do know may not agree with the negative behavior, but they largely just remain silent and ignore it as well. So be the change, Jester! You'll definitely have our respect if you're ever observed standing up to your own. But you can't blame our skepticism.
