I remember that season during a game hearing the PA guy announce that Utah lost to another WAC team that was going to seemingly challenge BYU for the conference championship that year. I was young enough and brand new to the in-state element of the rivalry that I knew Utah was BYU’s rival, but I didn’t really dislike Utah. When everyone cheered because Utah had lost that game, I remember thinking, “ that’s not good, why are people cheering? It would better if Utah beat that team because that will give them a loss and we’ll be able to take care of beating Utah when we play them.”
Then Utah beat BYU in dramatic fashion and followed it up with some on point classless behavior from their cheer squad running their flag around the stadium and players trying to take down the goal posts before BYU players came back on the field and put an end to it. That’s when I really started to dislike them and learned that every Utah loss is good and no Utah win in any scenario should be celebrated.
