I’ve heard it plenty since, but my first was back in the 90’s before it was named LES.

Me and my dad sitting there next to this nice old lady and some Ute fans come in a few rows in front of us, causing a whole commotion as they come in. We’re watching the players warm up and they’re saying all the “Joseph Smith blah blah”, “Mormons blah blah”. They’re drinking from their drinks that they brought in. This little old lady was so uncomfortable the whole time, obviously.

Opening prayer starts and the whole time these guys are belching, yelling, cussing, laughing. I’m peeking over to my dad and he’s got his arms folded and eyes shut tightly. As soon as he says “Amen” my dad dives two rows down right on one of the guys and starts swinging!! “Like a wild cat” he says when he’d tell it. The one guy got a bloody nose and my dad got scuffed up a little bit. Security broke them up and ushered the guy out to a cheering crowd.

My dad was a 5’6”, round, 45 year old guy and that was the only time I’ve seen him fight anyone (he barely raised his voice at me or my four brothers growing up). And he was bishop at the time! He just couldn’t take it. RIP Dad!

As has been pointed out on this thread already, this is much more prevalent in the Ute fanbase even if some Utes ignore it. Here is a thought exercise I went through with a co-worker once:

How many Ute fans that you personally know that fit the stereotype? It could be co-workers, neighbors, extended family, friends, FB friends.. people that you could walk up to in BYU gear and they’d turn into what we’ll call stereotypical Ute fan? (Confrontational, angry, bigoted, belligerent, clueless, etc)

How many BYU fans do you personally know that turn into that stereotype?

We could both name a bunch from the Ute side and neither could name a BYU fan like that. Call it blue goggles if you want, I know all fanbases have them, but if everyone around you knows a bunch of these morons maybe it’s just reality..
