BYU. Do other programs have curfews before games, of course they do. But do they get suspended for a game for being late? Most likely not. (disclaimer - of course we dont know the details of the suspensions and why)

From my perspective the Honor Code is VERY restrictive and that isnt just because of the no sex, no drinking portions. Those are fine for many kids, and certainly that could be the case with this kid that he has no intention of "sinning" as Mormons would define it. But I believe it is way beyond that.....no beard, no shadow of a beard or you cant get into the testing center. Curfews. Hairstyle. Dress code, etc, etc. No hanging out with girls after certain hours. Those aren't sins, but they aren't good at BYU.

As has been discussed 10,000 times on CB, the Honor Code is more strict than the standards set for a temple recommend, the standards of an Elders Quorum President or many other things. There is a big difference, massive, between wanting to go to a college to sin and not wanting to go to a place that is simply quite constricting.

For kids now, today, in our ward the standards of BYU are much more constricting than they have had most of their teenage years....and many see college as an experience to grow and become yourself away from the nest of the parents, not voluntarily enter into a MORE restrictive environment.

Should the HC be done away with? Of course not. Should it be more reflective of modern culture, some say yes and some say no that it would be bowing to the societal norms. But I can say that with a very high degree of certainty that some kids who have no desire to sin also are NOT attracted to BYU because they deem it too constricting. There are a LOT of really good kids who just want to be able to have a bit more independence and freedom of choice
