The real issue here is something that is so common today in many young people. They assume living by a code of any sort, Honor code, a personal moral code, etc. is restricting. Many really don't understand the law of choice and accountability. Going to BYU is a choice, living or not living the Honor code is a choice. Paying for mistakes is a natural consequence of choice. The bigger concern should not have anything to do with the honor code, but everything to do with an understanding of what constitutes choice, personal accountability and consequence. No one can take away the opportunity to choose. Even though a choice may not be pleasant one, it is still a choice. Even though I may not have expressed things very clearly, choice is a concept that is undergoing a change in definition in the world around us, which will impact the view many may have of the honor code and other such moral conduct codes.
