BYU has had a long and established special relationship with Native Americans and with the peoples of the Pacific.
There are over 35,000 Pacific Islanders in Utah. There are now at least 29 Tongan Wards in Utah, and 3 Tongan Stakes. Roughly 1 in 4 of all Tongans call Utah home.
BYU has at least verbally committed to being dedicated to widening its net racially... and it has made some strides, particularly with Asians.
However, the numbers in the graphic below indicate that BYU is in reality "whiter" than the US LDS population (which is roughly 85% white), nevermind that the worldwide LDS ethnic makeup is more ethnically diverse than that.
The American Indian and especially the Pacific Islander enrollment numbers are discouraging.
I very much appreciate our coaching staff being more focused on recruiting Pacific Islanders.
It's time for BYU Admissions to give more than lip-service to doing the same.
