This is a common attitude/opinion... it's flawed in general
I get that Americans and especially Mormons have a point of view: "Don't expect anything for free, work for it like the rest of us, we're not going to take the test for you." ... and let it be known that in principal I agree with this.

This seems to be how BYU Admissions and associated offices have been run over the past 12-15 years.

Without having access to application data, I would say that simply based on the dramatic increase in the Poly population in Utah over the past 15 years and their proximity to BYU, to see the number of Pacific Islanders admitted to BYU drop is pretty telling.

The "Earn it Yourself" concept is fine in principle, in practice it's not working... the reasons are complicated, but BYU needs to to better than this.
