Athletes generally tend to have really good academic statistics. Football and basketball is a mixed bag, but I wouldn't say it is overall a shinning example of how great under-qualified students can do with proper intervention.
And many, many of them scrape by and earn degrees in Sociology. I can say that because I have a degree in Sociology and tutored athletes at BYU.
Admitting students who don't qualify because they increase diversity isn't the worst policy in America. But I think the proponents should be more forthright about its many limitations and flaws. The anecdotes might not carry the argument, but they are many. I have a friend who would have been admitted to dental school if he was a minority. And I suspect the minorities who were admitted, who had scores/credentials like my friend, didn't come from any disadvantaged situations. The "disadvantage" isn't' reported - just their race.
